Blackjack, previously called Black Jack or Vingt-un, is an American version of the European card game Vingt-Vingto, whose name derives from the German word for “three” and the French word for “one.” Blackjack was invented by Francis J. Jordan in Vegas in the early part of the twentieth century.
Blackjack is played with the use of a deck of cards that are dealt out in three piles, face up. In a standard blackjack game, the player deals two cards to each player (either face up or face down). The dealer then counts the cards dealt and draws a card from each of the remaining cards, discarding the one he didn’t deal. At this point, the player has five cards left and need to find one more, if not all of the five cards.
For each player, the dealer randomly chooses three cards, called the Jack, Queen and King of the five cards left. If there are no Jacks, Queens or Kings left, the dealer has no cards left, so the player wins the pot. Players can choose to play for money or for any combination of chips. Players can choose to fold their hands, and it is usually possible for them to keep one more card in their hand, if they have one more than anyone else. The dealer, on the other hand, has a full deck to work with. There are three types of blackjack: standard blackjack, progressive blackjack and special blackjack.
Standard blackjack is a game played at the same table as the regular game of poker, though there is no dealer involved. The game is dealt in the same way. A player will place their cards in the front of them face down, starting with the Ace, Queen and King. They will then deal the next four cards in the order of the jack, queen and king, beginning with the Ace, then the Ace, the Queen and the King. The remaining cards will be dealt face down and in a random order. After a player has dealt his or her first five cards, another dealer will deal out the second five cards and begin the counting process. If no one has a high card, the dealer will deal in a new round of cards until someone has a high card.
When a player has reached zero after dealing out a minimum of five cards, they must reveal their cards, and the dealer will deal out the deck. from the position in which the player dealt out their last five cards. When a player has dealt out the minimum number of cards, the dealer reveals the cards from his or her straight-up deck. and then the players go their separate ways. It is possible to play blackjack over multiple tables, but each table will have its own dealer.
In addition to the cards dealt, the dealer may also reveal aces, kings and queens of the five cards left in the deck if one is left, depending on the dealer. If a player already has cards in their hand, it is possible to bet or call based on the dealer’s face up hand, without having to deal out the cards.
