It was a condition of the architect that to reduce the enormous weight that Cast Iron would have put on the roof structure, we must use Aluminium. The corner post is over 5 feet tall and has a complex decorative finial.
crest2x Click to Enlarge July 1996 The panels were received earlier in the year. Each casting (either a 2 or 3 panel section) has a basic locating joint to keep it in line. Due to their rough cast nature, each joint has been cleaned up by hand filing. The feet also required the casting marks to be filed off. The picture shows two joined sections with a post at either end. Note the ornamental flowers in the post-top.
crest3x Click to Enlarge Sept 1998 The crestings were completed late in 1997 but the method of roof fixing was more complex that originally thought. To stop corrosion, they were finally mounted on nylon bushings and bolted to a hardwood frame, itself bolted to the roof structure by SVR contractors. Backing Signal Back BACK
